Evenflo Discovery car seat
The problem
There are concerns the car seat could fail in certain types of collision.
Details
Evenflo Discovery infant seats made between 2005 and 2008. Models recalled in the US are 390, 391, 534 and 552. Only the 390 and 391 models have been sold in New Zealand, but it is possible other models have been brought in privately.
What to do
Evenflo is providing owners with a free extra fastener to keep the seat in place. It will not be available here for 4-6 weeks - in the meantime retailers will take names of those needing one and they will be contacted when they arrive.
The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the US) is urging owners to keep using their car seats while waiting for the new fastener.

Mattel Barbie toy animals and dinner sets
The problem
The toy animals and dinner sets were painted by sub-contractors in China using unapproved paint.
Details
Affected items within the playsets:
K8606 Barbie Table & Chairs Kitchen Playset: Two dinner plates; Miniature dog; Potato chip bowl; Salad bowl
K8607 Barbie Bathtub & Toilet Playset: Miniature cat
K8608 Barbie Living Room Playset: Miniature cat
K8609 Barbie Desk & Chair Bedroom Playse: Miniature dog
No Barbie dolls are included in the recall.
What to do
Do not return the toys to retail stores.
Remove the toys from children and contact Mattel (NZ) Ltd on 0800 174 063, Monday to Friday 10am-7.00pm, or email infoaust@mattel.com to confirm you have one of the affected products, and arrange return and a refund.

What to do
While no illness or injury has been reported in relation to this issue you should take these toys away from children immediately.
To receive a replacement item send the recalled product to:

Include your full name and address details so a replacement item can be sent. Allow 6 to 8 weeks for the replacement.
If for some reason a replacement is not possible a similar item will be sent for the recalled item.
